Every four years we organise an Expedition to Lochearnhead Scout Station in Southern Highlands of Scotland, for a week of mountain and water activities.
Lochearnhead is a disused railway station that was purchased by Hertfordshire Scouts in 1960 and opened as a base for adventurous activities in 1962. During the pandemic closure of 2020 – 2022 it has been extensively renovated and refurbished.

To be eligible to attend our District Expedition, a young person must be over 10.5 and under 18 years old and an invested Scout or Explorer. We also take a large team of leaders to instruct, support and cater for the young people during their trip.
During the week they are on the Station, the young people are challenged to take part in different activities in a new and exciting environment. These vary between each expedition and may include: hikes in the mountains with high overnight camps, day hikes, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting, canyoning, mountain biking and SUP Boarding. The activities vary slightly each trip depending on current weather conditions, what is currently available in the area and costs. Activities are run by qualified, experienced instructors either with Scout Permits or from external activity companies.
This is an exciting trip that encourages Young People to challenge their own abilities and to develop new skills, both physically and mentally, in a well supported environment. They will meet and take part in activities with scouts of a similar age from across Letchworth, Baldock and Ashwell District. Before each expedition we run training days where the young people can meet the other Scouts, Explorers and Leaders who are going to be on the same trip.
Many of our previous attendees have gone on to develop their own skills in adventurous activities further, and now hold scouting permits and National Qualifications in these areas.
For more information speak to your leader who will be able to let you know when the next Expedition is due to take place.
